Deodhar Trophy 2023: Puducherry, August 3: South Zone won their ninth Deodhar Trophy title with a commanding 45-run win over East Zone in the final on Thursday.
Rohan Kunnummal starred for South Zone with a sensational century, scoring 107 off 75 balls. He was ably supported by Mayank Agarwal, who scored 63, and N Jagadeesan, who made 54.
South Zone’s bowlers then did a fine job of restricting East Zone to 283 in their reply. Washington Sundar was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 36 runs.
The win is South Zone’s ninth Deodhar Trophy title, and their first since 2017. They are now the second most successful team in the history of the tournament, behind North Zone, who have won 11 titles.
Kunnummal’s Sensational Century
Kunnummal’s century was the highlight of the match. He came out to bat in the first over and immediately started attacking the bowlers. He hit 11 fours and four sixes in his innings.
Kunnummal’s partnership with Agarwal was particularly important. The two put on 181 runs for the first wicket, which gave South Zone a solid platform to build on.

South Zone’s Bowling Attack
South Zone’s bowling attack was also impressive. They bowled with discipline and consistency, and they never allowed East Zone to get on top.
Sundar was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 36 runs. He was ably supported by Mukesh Choudhary, who took two wickets for 44 runs, and Shahbaz Ahmed, who took two wickets for 46 runs.
South Zone’s Ninth Title
The win is South Zone’s ninth Deodhar Trophy title. They are now the second most successful team in the history of the tournament, behind North Zone, who have won 11 titles.
South Zone’s last title came in 2017, when they defeated West Zone in the final. They will be hoping to build on this success in the upcoming seasons.
