Baldur’s Gate 3, the highly anticipated sequel to the classic CRPGs, has been in early access for a few months now. Players have been exploring the world of Faerûn and discovering all sorts of hidden secrets, including a few references to other games.
One such reference is to the popular MMORPG Final Fantasy 14. In the Heavensward expansion, players meet a character named Haurchefant Greystone, a knight who becomes a close friend and ally.
In one pivotal scene, Haurchefant sacrifices himself to save the Warrior of Light (the player character). His last words are “A smile better suits a hero,” a line that has become iconic among Final Fantasy fans.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, there is a hidden side quest called “Folk Hero: A Smile Better Suits.” This quest takes players to a small village where they must help a group of villagers defend themselves from a goblin attack.
At the end of the quest, the player character is given the option to say, “A smile better suits a hero.” This is a clear reference to Haurchefant’s line in Final Fantasy 14, and it is sure to be appreciated by fans of both games.

This is not the first time that Baldur’s Gate has referenced Final Fantasy. In the original Baldur’s Gate, there was a character named Minsc who said the line “Go for the eyes, Boo!” This line is a reference to the character of Quina Quen from Final Fantasy IX.
It seems that the developers of Baldur’s Gate are fans of Final Fantasy, and they are not afraid to include references to the game in their own work. This is a nice touch that shows that the developers are paying attention to the details and that they care about the fans.
I’m sure that there are more Final Fantasy references to be found in Baldur’s Gate 3. I’ll be keeping an eye out for them as I continue to explore the game.
