England fought back on day two of the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley, reducing the tourists’ lead to 142 runs at stumps.
Australia had built a commanding lead of 26 runs at lunch, but England’s bowlers struck in the afternoon session to reduce the deficit. Ben Stokes top-scored for England with 80, while Mark Wood hit 39 off 21 balls in a late cameo.
Australia’s Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were unbeaten on 18 and 17 respectively at stumps. Pat Cummins was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, taking 6-91. The third day of the match is expected to be a crucial one, with England needing to reduce Australia’s lead further if they are to have any chance of winning the match.

- Australia started the day well, adding 58 runs to their overnight score before Stuart Broad dismissed David Warner for 24.
- Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith then put on 50 for the second wicket, but Moeen Ali struck twice in quick succession to remove both batsmen.
- England’s bowlers continued to attack, and Mitchell Starc was run out for 11 to leave Australia 116-4 at tea.
- Stokes and Wood then added 57 for the seventh wicket, before Stokes was dismissed for 80.
- Wood hit 39 off 21 balls, but England were eventually bowled out for 237.
- Head and Marsh batted well for Australia in the evening session, and they will be looking to build on their partnership on day three.
