Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is one of the most anticipated video games of all time. However, PC gamers will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on it. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025, but there is no word yet on a PC release date.

A former Rockstar developer has shed some light on why PC gamers are being left out in the cold.

Mike York, who worked on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, said in a recent YouTube video that there are a few reasons why GTA 6 won’t be available on PC at launch.

One reason is that it simply takes longer to develop a PC port of a game like GTA 6. This is because there are so many different PC hardware configurations, and the game has to be tested on all of them to make sure it runs smoothly.

“When you’re doing the PC port you have to test things on multiple different hardware [setups], different GPUs,” York said. “Not just one or two, but 10 or 20.”

Another reason is that Rockstar likely wants to prioritize console sales. In the past, PlayStation has been the bigger seller for GTA games, so Rockstar may want to focus on getting the game out on that platform first.

“The reason why a PC port comes later and why it’s not the first thing that comes out, is because they want to prioritize what sells,” York said. “Most of the time, especially in the past, PlayStation was the big seller.”

It’s also possible that Rockstar is planning to release a remastered version of GTA 5 for PC before GTA 6 comes out. This would give PC gamers something to play while they wait for the new game.

Whatever the reason, PC gamers will have to wait a bit longer to play GTA 6. But hopefully, the wait will be worth it.

Here are some additional reasons why GTA 6 might not be available on PC at launch:

  • Rockstar may want to avoid piracy. PC games are more susceptible to piracy than console games, so Rockstar may want to wait until they can implement strong anti-piracy measures before releasing the game on PC.
  • Rockstar may want to make sure the game is as polished as possible before releasing it on PC. PC gamers are known for being more demanding than console gamers, so Rockstar may want to take some extra time to make sure the PC version of GTA 6 is up to their standards.

Only time will tell when GTA 6 will be released on PC. But in the meantime, PC gamers can enjoy the many other great games that are available on the platform.
